Twinkle Troughton Exhibition - 'Landscapes for a Lonely Wolf'

Twinkle Troughton is our artist for March, exhibiting a collection of paintings, 'Landscapes for a Lonely Wolf'.
Exhibited for the first time in Margate, Twinkle’s imagined landscapes are inspired by the post-WW2 poet and refugee Janos Pilinszky who wrote a small but poignant body of work based on what he experienced.
Pilinszky’s poem, 'The Lonely Wolf', is a haunting portrayal of a refugee. In her paintings, Twinkle sees the wolf attempting to navigate a path to safety. Driven on by hope and dreams of ‘home’, the wolf travels over vast lands, often marred with uncertainty and isolation as drawbridges are pulled up.
Described in the poem as a ‘child-like beast’, Pilinszky alludes to the refugee’s age. Here titles of some of the paintings are taken from diaries of young refugees, connecting the similar experiences of refugees throughout the decades.
Primarily painting on paper, combining oil paints with mediums that by their very nature oppose each other, painted layers distort and separate. Strange fictional landscapes are pulled out of the random markings by the inclusion of detail such as houses, boats and trees. Clusters of tents, lifebuoys and other items alluding to the plight of the refugee can often be found.
Although these scenes are often dark, the paintings can also be dreamlike, within which pockets of colour and light can often be found, conveying hope in our beautiful but confused world.
